Roos

by Janet Lever-Wood
March 30th, 2016

423-roo-with-root-ftTwo kangaroos come quietly to the water’s edge.
One fearless, holding steady, balanced on its thick tail,
bending a soft brown back down to drink.
The other more reticent, listening for foreign footsteps.
I raise my hand to block the harsh light and with three rocking leaps,
the roos retreat into the embrace of pandanus shade.
